Open Consultations - 2019 Year of Indigenous Languages (EMRIP side event)
In the context of the 10th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, UNESCO and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) will organize a joint side event entitled “Open Consultations – 2019 Year of Indigenous Languages” (11 July 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland).
With reference to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution (Ref.: A/RES/71/178) on “Rights of Indigenous peoples” adopted in December 2016, 2019 was proclaimed as the Year of Indigenous Languages. The global celebration will draw attention to the critical loss of indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalize and promote indigenous languages and to take further urgent steps at the national and international levels.
The side event, co-organized by UNESCO and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), is a part of the consultative process for the preparation of the Plan of Action for the celebration of 2019 Year of Indigenous Languages.
