This side event will provide an introduction on the Ocean Pathway which will seek to establish the role of the ocean and climate change in the UNFCCC process by 2020, starting with the Fiji Presidency of COP23 and an Ocean Pathway Partnership.
Objectives of the Ocean Pathway include the following:
• Introduce a COP23 Presidency-led initiative on the ocean that will acknowledge the important relationship between the ocean and climate change with acknowledgement of the Call for Action from the UN Ocean Conference; call for consideration of an agenda on the ocean by 2019; and flag the establishment of an Ocean Pathway that will be part of the COP23 record
• Enhance the opportunity from current and emerging climate change funding under the UNFCCC for support of ocean health and the maintaining of critical ocean ecosystems
• Coordination for an emphasis on climate change and the ocean on existing priorities, including sustainable transport, cities and human settlements, population displacement and migration, coastal infrastructure, ecosystems, food security and energy
• Strengthen cooperation of the Parties for the conservation and enhancement of the resilience of the ocean under the UNFCCC
• Encourage the insertion of the ocean into Nationally Determined Contributions
• Link existing ocean activities and partnerships within the Ocean Pathway
