UNESCO in close coordination with the Kenya Media Sector Working which brings together the Kenya media stakeholders and co- chaired by the Media Council of Kenya and the Kenya Union of Journalists is organizing a 2-day Regional Conference from 13-14 November 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya. This is within the framework of marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (IDEI).
The 2-day conference will bring together participants from the Ministries of Information, Justice and Security, Associations of Journalists and Media Workers, Civil Society/Human Rights defenders, Journalism training institution, media regulatory bodies and the media development partners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania. In addition, the conference will be enriched through sharing of good practices by international speakers who have a wealth of experience in safety of journalists’ mechanisms.
The expected outcome from the proposed Regional Conference is for the Eastern African countries to agree on regional parameters’, in establishing national mechanisms for safety of journalists based on the country’s specific context. This will also provide an opportunity to engage with regional actors on safety of journalists and mobilise the Eastern Africa media development partners, to provide the necessary support for implementation of the recommendations from the proposed conference.
