MINEPS V Follow-up Meeting: "Sports Advocacy Initiative - Public Investment in Sport and Physical Activity Generates Socio-Economic Benefits"
The meeting will gather experts in sports and physical education from different governmental, educational, and scientific institutions. It looks to generate networks, spread good practice and collect policies in the advocacy of increasing investments in physical education and sports.
The MINEPS V Declaration of Berlin and its over seventy commitments and recommendations are the legitimate expression of a global consensus amongst political decision makers, experts and practitioners on the principles and orientations that should guide national and international sport and physical education policies, with particular attention given to the following issues:
• Access to Sport as a Fundamental Right for All.
• Promoting Investment in Sport and Physical Education Programmes.
• Preserving the Integrity of Sport.
The meeting is the first of a series of expert consultations with a view to implementing the strategy that has been designed for the follow-up of MINEPS V (cf 37C/ Inf. 16), specifically looking at commission 2: Promoting Investment in Sport and Physical Education.
In the context of increasingly sedentary lifestyles around the world, physical activity has become a global issue. The societal and economic benefits of physical activity are intertwined. The benefits of investing in physical activity are three fold.
The increasing significance of physical activity in the current public health debate is based on the credence that regular activity triggers a wide range of biological mechanisms that have protective effects on many life-threatening chronic conditions and non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, heart disease and stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes.
Secondly, there are the societal benefits of investing in physical activity, which include ideals of tolerance and non-violence, mutual understanding and solidarity.
Finally, having an active lifestyle contributes towards the integrated development of mind and body, positively enhancing self-confidence and self- esteem, as well as enhancing cognitive development and academic achievements.
