International seminar on “The Impact of Glaciers Melting on Water Resources in Central Asia in the Context of Climate Change”
The United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) and the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office jointly organize the international seminar on “The Impact of Glaciers Melting on Water Resources in Central Asia in the Context of Climate Change” to be held on 8-9 November 2016 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. The event is organized as a follow up to seminars that took place in Almaty (2013) and Dushanbe (2014).
During the two previous seminars on the “Impact of glaciers melting in Central Asia on National and Trans-Boundary Water Systems”, organized by UNRCCA, UNESCO and partners, an attempt was made to reach a common understanding on the impact of climate change on glacier melting and water resources, including transboundary water resources, and on the lives of the people in Central Asia.
The Bishkek seminar is aimed to promote regional dialogue on glacier research, climate change adaptation and sustainable water resources management in the Central Asian region. It will bring together representatives of the relevant institutions of Central Asian countries and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, as well as representatives of the donor organizations, scientific institutions and independent experts. The seminar is expected to formulate recommendations for concrete activities and set up a platform to improve the cooperation in Central Asia on identified priority areas.
