Indoor soccer cup for lesbian and bisexual women
The UNESCO Office in San José will show support for lesbian and bisexual women’s rights through the patronage of the sporting event LesBi Copa, an Indoor Soccer Cup for lesbian and bisexual women, organized by the organization Beso Diverso in Heredia, San José and San Ramón (Costa Rica), during the months of January and February 2017.
Beso Diverso is an organization which defends the rights of lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals in Costa Rica.
The Indoor Soccer Cup will consist of three mini-tournaments and a triangular final.
Its objective is to provide visibility to the diversity of women in sport in Costa Rica, and to generate a space for dialogue among participants on different forms of violence that women can experience due to their sexual orientation.
Using a sporting event as a way to combat discrimination based on sexuality is in line with UNESCO's mandate, which is inspired by values of respect and tolerance as a way to promote understanding between different people. Sport provides a unique and dynamic platform to promote these values and to engage the public in the promotion of gender equality and sexual diversity.
