From March 2 - 5 2020, a sub-regional workshop on the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property and the UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects is taking place in Kingston, Jamaica. This workshop aims to confront illicit trafficking of pre-Columbian, religious and colonial cultural heritage in the Caribbean, as well with the illicit commercialization of the underwater cultural heritage recovered from shipwrecks and other submerged structures.

The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport of Jamaica is hosting the workshop in cooperation with the Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO and the UNESCO Cluster Office for the Caribbean.

Working Group on the Revision of the Rules of Procedure of the Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention

Established by the Fifth Meeting of States Parties (Resolution5.MSP 13, May 2019), the first meeting of the Working Group on the Revision of the Internal Regulation of the Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property (Convention 1970), will held on 1st March 2021, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at UNESCO Headquarters in Room XI.

Combatting Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property during COVID-19 - Illegal excavations and online trade Online Expert Meeting

UNESCO is organizing an Online Expert Meeting to discuss the increasing threat of looting and illicit trafficking of cultural property during the COVID-19 pandemic, and explore possible measures to be urgently undertaken to support countries’ efforts in protecting their cultural property.
