The workshop will bring together ocean scientists and ocean educators, policy-makers, and representatives of the maritime sector to discuss research and education issues, including the leveraging of international ocean science research in education initiatives and the establishment of new international collaborations.
A key focus of the workshop is to develop a pipeline in ocean education that will have a large impact internationally. This is particularly important for a number of reasons. There are now environmental issues that we are facing with the ocean that are global and will require a literate public to understand these issues. It is also particularly important to educate our political leaders. It is a challenge that all nations face going forward. This effort is critical to addressing public ocean science education, including that of the world’s political leaders. The workshop aims at exploring the possibilities to create new partnerships to take action on global ocean science education priorities, to develop collaborative, cross-sector activities, and to set goals for the global ocean science education community.
