UNESCO and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan are organizing an International Forum devoted to the official launch of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022), to be held on 23 August 2013 in Burabay, Republic of Kazakhstan.
Bringing together leaders and personalities and leaders from the political, academic, religious, business, cultural fields, as well as representatives from civil society and NGOs, this forum aims to open the debate on various aspects and topics to be explored during this Decade, with a view to shaping a new global agenda for promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue, non-violence, cultural diversity and mutual understanding, so to bolster reconciliation and peace.
Discussions during this forum will cover the following themes:
- Intercultural dialogue as the major source for building peace and attaining sustainable development,
- Role of international organizations in popularization and fostering of intercultural dialogue and understanding,
- Education and media pluralism as a means of promoting understanding between nations and cultures,
- Vision of the modern aspects of multiculturalism and key challenges in the framework of global reality.
This Forum is one of the first major international events to mark the proclamation of this Decade by the United Nations General Assembly last December 2012 (resolution 67/104). This Decade is built on the momentum inspired by the International decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010) and the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2010).
Throughout the periods from 2013 to 2022 therefore, and under UNESCO’s leadership, Member States and the international community at large are called upon to enhance activities relating to intercultural and interreligious dialogue, for promoting tolerance, mutual understanding, cooperation and peace.
