Expert Meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in the Arab States
In the Arab region, climate change already has an impact on people’s livelihoods and lives. There is evidence of prominent increases in the intensity and frequency of extreme events such as heat waves, tropical cyclones, prolonged dry spells, intense rainfall, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and severe dust storms in the region.
In this context, education systems have a critical role to play in enhancing the mitigation and adaptation capacities of communities. The international expert meeting will focus on the challenges that climate change poses to education systems in the region. It will develop recommendations and a plan of action to promote education as an important means to address climate change in Arab countries.
The conference will further set the stage for UNESCO’s action in support of countries from the region for the recently launched Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development.
