Exhibition on the International Year of Crystallography 2014
The International Year of Crystallography commemorates the centennial of the birth of X-ray crystallography, thanks to the work of Max von Laue, William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg. The year 2014 also commemorates the 50th anniversary of another Nobel Prize, that awarded to Dorothy Hodgkin for her work on vitamin B12 and penicillin.
This «Journey into the crystal» recounts humanity’s interaction with cristal, through art and science, from prehistoric times to the presenday. It invites the public on a journey to discover the birth of crystallography and crystals in their many aspects…
• an objet of desire,
• an objet of science, source of information on life and matter
• an objet of high-technology with many applications.
The Year is being organized by UNESCO jointly with the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). It will complement two other International initiatives by contributing to the follow-up of the International Year of Chemistry (2011) and providing an introduction to the planned International Year of Light (2015), endorsed by UNESCO at its 190th Executive Board. UNESCO is implementing the IYCr2014 through its International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP).
