A panel discussion "Education for Peace and Development" will be held on 24 January 2019 in the United Nations Office in Geneva to mark the first International Day of Education.

The panel presents a timely opportunity to raise and discuss major developments as well as key challenges at the global education landscape, with a particular focus on education as a fundamental human right, the role of education for peace and development, and education in emergencies.
On 3 December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted with consensus a Resolution proclaiming 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

The celebration of this Day presents an excellent opportunity to affirm education as a fundamental human right as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 26) and many other international human rights instruments. The right to education is one of the key principles underpinning the Education 2030 Agenda.
