Discussions on the professional standards of journalists in Uzbekistan
On 1 May 2014, a round table discussion will be held in Tashkent dedicated to the Issues of Increasing Professional Ethics and Responsibility of Journalists in Uzbekistan.
Organized by the Public Fund for Support and Development of Independent Press and Information Agencies of Uzbekistan with support from UNESCO and UNDP, the round table marks the World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated annually on 3 May. The main theme chosen for this year’s celebration is Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post - 2015 Development Agenda.
Given the important role that the media play in promoting democracy, development and dialogue, UNESCO encourages its member states to have legal frameworks in place that create an enabling environment for the free media to flourish. UNESCO also encourages journalists to develop codes of ethics that would guide them on their role, their rights and obligations and how they can best perform their job.
Discussions on the development of a code of ethics of journalists were launched in Uzbekistan on the occasion of the 2013 World Press Freedom Day. This year’s round table will allow for the consideration of the draft code by some 50 editors-in-chief, with the participation of the Ambassador of the USA, UK and Switzerland.
