The project aims to inventory and document the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of the Ambae community who is the custodian of diverse ICH including “Vanuatu Sand Drawing”.
Since the eruption of the Manaro Voui Volcano in the Ambae Island in September 2017, and the following compulsory evacuation in August 2018, the Ambae community evacuated and relocated to the nearby islands of Maewo and Santo.

Two teams composed of the Ambae fieldworkers and the staff of Vanuatu Culture Centre (VCC) will receive training in ICH inventorying in Port Vila on 8 November 2018. They will then undertake a mission to the Maewo and Sonto Islands to conduct a one-week field research to collect stories and document ICH of the Ambae community. The objectives of this research are to identify the immediate needs of the Ambae evacuees and to develop an ICH safeguarding plan.
