Culture: the Key to a successful transition towards the sustainable development goals
The event “Culture: the Key to a successful transition towards the sustainable development goals” will take place on the margins of the 2015 ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review on “Managing the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals: What it will take”.
The event will build on the result of the Post-2015 Dialogues on Culture and Development and will aim at feeding the last phase of the elaboration process of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
The event will take place during a breakfast meeting at UN Headquarters and will be co-chaired by the Director-General of UNESCO and the Permanent Representative of Peru to the UN. The panel will be composed of principals UNFPA and UNDP; Permanent Representatives of the countries closely involved in the process of the Post-2015 Dialogues on Culture and Development (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ecuador, Mali, Morocco and Serbia, Group of Friends on Culture and Development), and a moderator (expert on culture and development). Participants will include representatives of Permanent Missions to the UN, representatives of UN Organizations and civil society organizations.
The objective of the breakfast meeting is to provide an opportunity for Member States, UN actors and civil society organizations to discuss the critical recommendations which emerged from the national and global dialogues and to enable a debate around the implementation of these recommendations in light of the SDGs.
The event will address overarching themes in relation to culture, such as: poverty reduction; sustainable urban regeneration and development; quality education; gender equality and women’s empowerment; environmental sustainability and culture as a security and humanitarian concern.
