UNESCO and FOSSASIA share a belief in the tremendous potential of free and open-source software and technology as well as open data and knowledge to advance development.

The two-day hackathon is aimed at creating open source science apps and games that seize this potential and respond to environmental issues, such as climate change, and other challenges to peaceful and sustainable development.

The hackathon is open to all – developers, designers, open source contributors, bloggers and journalists are invited to join and women are especially encouraged to be involved.

The final apps will be assessed by judges on criteria including their scalability and replicability in Mekong countries; innovative visualization of data; potential to mobilize and spur engagement among key stakeholders; gender-sensitivity; and app functionality. Existing apps are not eligible for this competition.

UNESCO and FOSSASIA share a belief in the tremendous potential of free and open-source software and technology as well as open data and knowledge to advance development.

This aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and UNESCO’s mandate to build knowledge societies and empower local communities by sharing and increasing access to information and knowledge.
