Climate Resilience, Water Security and Habitat Protection in Mediterranean Coastal Areas
Within the framework of Child Project 2.1 on "Climate Resilience, Water Security and Habitat Protection in Mediterranean Coastal Areas", the UNESCO's International Hydrological Program (UNESCO-IHP) will be involved in groundwater-related activities as follows:
i) UNESCO-IHP will be the lead agency for the activities, and therefore responsible for their execution, related to the "Protection of coastal aquifers and groundwater ecosystems” [Outcome 5 of the Med Program]. In this context, we will continue the work started with you in the previous phase;
(ii) UNESCO-IHP will contribute as a partner to activities related to "Improving Coastal Zone Sustainability through the adoption of Comprehensive National Strategies for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)" [Program Outcome 4 Med], jointly with GWP, Plan Bleu, and PAP / RAC as the lead agency.
A first sub-regional consultation meeting on Child Project 2.1 was held in September in Montenegro with the countries on the Northern shore of the Mediterranean. UNESCO-IHP is responsible for organizing the second regional consultation for the countries of the Southern shore of the Mediterranean and gather Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia. This meeting will be held in Rabat, Morocco, from 12 to 13 December 2017, with the objective of bringing together implementing agencies and countries to present in detail the Child Project 2.1 and its two sub-components. During this consultation, countries will be invited to provide their feedback on the activities and discuss the selection of the pilot areas and aquifers.
