Celebration of World Science Day in Timor Leste
UNESCO Jakarta celebrates the World Science Day for Peace and Development, focusing on science centres and museums to highlight their important contributions to sciences.
Science, like society, is highly diverse. Each year, World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to demonstrate why science is relevant to people’s daily lives and to engage them in debates on related issues. In 2016, the celebration focuses on science centres and science museums to highlight their important contributions to science communication. To support the Center for the Study of Science and Mathematics (SESIM) to carry out their annual commemoration of World Science (and Mathematics) Day (LMSM), with the further aims as follows:
1. To popularize these two areas as interesting and critical for the future of Timor-Leste.
2. Give opportunity to junior-high and high-school teachers and students to develop hands-on activities in the areas of science and mathematics, and present them to their peers.
3. To carry out an public event to showcase both students' activities in this area as well as other institutions and organizations.
4. To use the creative ideas of students and teachers to create and distribute a manual for other schools to use in informal science and mathematics teaching.
This 2016 celebration will involve students and teachers from all the municipalities of Timor-Leste. The venue will be in a rural area near a school just outside Dili, and will invite many local institutions of learning, both students and teachers as well as inviting other institutions to make presentations in the areas of science education.
