World Radio Day will be nationally celebrated in Zanzibar for the first time this year. The national consultation meeting organized in collaboration with Tanzania Development Information Organization-Community Media Network will bring together representatives from the government, civil society and from across the media system to discuss what diversity means in today’s media landscape. This event is a conversation with radio hosts, regulators, politicians, artists and influencers to deliberate on the concept of diversity from various perspectives to result in a common resolution on the theme, Radio and Diversity based on three sub-themes: Diversity in Representation, New and emerging technologies for Diversity and Policy Environment for Diversity.
The Guest of Honour is the Minister of Information, Tourism and Heritage, Hon. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo. UNESCO Head of Office and Representative to Tanzania, Tirso Dos Santos, representatives of partner organizations including the Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Tanzania, Prof. Elifas Bisanda, Executive Director of the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs, Abubakar Karsan, the Secretary General of Tanzania Editors Forum, Neville Meena and Executive Director of the Media Council of Tanzania are also confirmed to attend.

Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO, and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD). On World Radio Day 2020 (WRD 2020), UNESCO calls on radio stations to uphold diversity, both in their newsroom and on the airwaves.
