Celebration of the 20th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
By the initiative of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, the celebration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, on 17 October 2013 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, will include representatives of more than one half-dozen NGOs working in particular with groups suffering from extreme poverty, members of civil society, and representatives of several Member States of UNESCO.
The event will be opened by the Executive Secretary of the Management of Social Transformation (MOST) Programme also Director of the Youth and Social Inclusion Division of UNESCO, Ms Angela Melo.
It is an opportunity to make the voice of people living in poverty heard, and for them to share, during an hour, their commitment, their daily struggle, and their aspirations.
After a throughout consultation with activists and people living in extreme poverty , coordinated by the International Committee for October 17, the following theme was chosen for this 20th celebration: "Together towards a world without discrimination : Building on the experience and knowledge of persons in extreme poverty . "
More than ever, this is the year to highlight the multiple discrimination that affect the poorest among us, beginning with their exclusion from the political, economic and social spheres, and their lack of representation in the shaping, implementation, and evaluation of policies and programs that affect their lives directly or indirectly.
On 17 October 2013, UNESCO will host the interventions of activists fighting against extreme poverty and for the establishment of more inclusive societies, and the main organizers of the event. Also, during this event, two movies will be screened : a video message on the significance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by Jacques Petidor, an activist for human rights in Haiti, and an extract of the film entitled "Avec les plus pauvres, repenser la lutte contre la misère" which was shot together with residents of Mauritius living in extreme poverty.
Participants will also attend the reading of the Commemorative Stone in Honor of the Victims of Extreme Poverty, inaugurated on 17 October 1987, on the Parvis des Droits de l’Homme et des Libertés in Paris, at the foot of Palais de Chaillot, which hosted in 1948 the signature of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Initiated by the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, this event is co-organised by New Humanity, the International Association of Charities (AIC), the International Women Association (AIF), Pax Christi, the International Movement ATD Fourth World, the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP), the International Catholic Centre for Cooperation with UNESCO (CCIC) and the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE).
