In Nigeria, this celebration is led by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and mobilizes different organizations, including UN agencies, under the International Peace Day Committee, with a week of activities planned from 14 to 21 September 2018.

UNESCO will support in this context the Regional Launch of the Book “Long Walk of Peace: Towards a Culture of Prevention”, a publication developed in partnership with the Abat Oliba CEU University (Barcelona, Spain), and in collaboration of 32 UN agencies.

This presentation in Nigeria will echo a call for peace and violence prevention, ahead of the steps towards Presidential elections, scheduled in February 2019.

The Book Launch will be followed by two other UNESCO-sponsored events:
i) A Peace lecture on the theme: “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70: Reflections on the Right to Peace in Contemporary Nigeria”, and an Award Ceremony for the contest on: “Youth Championing the Right to Peace in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”.
ii) An Award Ceremony of a contest organized by the National Art Gallery of Nigeria on “Youth Championing the Right to Peace in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, targeting youth aged 13 to 17 and competing under three categories: painting, photo, and essay.

The above initiatives all contribute to the implementation of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022) for which UNESCO is the coordinating lead agency for the United Nations system.

The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations resolution 36/67, and invites all Member States, organs and organizations of the United Nations system to celebrate and commemorate in an appropriate manner the international Day of Peace, observed every year on 21 September. For 2018, the theme chosen is: “The Right to Peace. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights @70”.
