This event, co-hosted by UNESCO and Japan/MEXT, aims to raise awareness of the project on “Broadening the Application of the Sustainability Science Approach”, which was initiated in October 2015 by UNESCO, through its Natural Sciences and Social and human Sciences Sectors, together with the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Japan/MEXT). A reception will follow brief presentations by the stakeholders of the project.

The overall objective of the project is to foster dialogue and disseminate concrete policy messages that will help UNESCO Member States introduce a sustainability science approach in response to global challenges, through the organization of three symposia. A set of guidelines on sustainability science will be developed - from definition to application, for consideration by UNESCO Member States in the last quarter of 2017.

The first symposium took place in April 2016. The second will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 19 to 21 December 2016 and will focus on region-specific approaches and experiences.
