The Permanent Delegations of Germany, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala to UNESCO and the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme Secretariat are jointly organizing an information event on the Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve at UNESCO Headquarters on 12 September 2013. This event will be followed by the presentation of an exhibit of the Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve.
The idea to create a Biosphere Reserve between El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala in the area of Trifinio began in 1987. Following in 1997, the three parties recognized the area as a special interest that represented an indivisible ecological area. In 2010, each country submitted to the UNESCO/MAB Secretariat an individual nomination application for a Biosphere Reserve. These countries signed a common agreement with a linked zoning area to create a tri-national Biosphere Reserve.
During its 23th session that was held in Dresden (Germany) from 28 June to 1 July 2011, the International Coordination Council of the MAB Programme approved and accepted the establishment of the first tri-national biosphere reserve in Central America. It commended the National Authorities for the work achieved so far, as this biosphere reserve is considered a major contribution to the implementation of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, an initiative created in 1997.
This meeting will provide information on the initiative: “Biosphere Reserves as Model Regions for a Green Economy – The example of Trifinio - Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala”, which is promoted by the German Authorities.
Participants include also representatives from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the manager of the Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere. A photo exhibit on this Biosphere Reserve will be presented after this event.
