The Award Ceremony of the 2017 UNESCO-UNAM/Jaime Torres Bodet Prize in social sciences, humanities and arts will take place in Havana, Cuba, on 24 January 2018.

Casa de las Américas (Cuba) was designated as winner of the 2017 Edition of the Prize by UNESCO’s Director-General, on the recommendation of an international jury.

The Award Ceremony of the Prize is co-organized by UNESCO and the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO. The event will be organized in the main conference hall of Casa de las Américas, one of the best-known and most prominent cultural institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Four hundred persons are expected to attend, including renowned intellectuals, government officials and representatives from diplomatic missions in Cuba. The programme of the ceremony contains a series of interventions related to the official award of the prize as well as a cultural segment.

The ceremony will be widely disseminated through social media, TV, radio and written press, both at the national level and internationally.

The ceremony will highlight UNESCO’s commitments to the global agendas in favour of inclusive, sustainable and peaceful societies.

Awarded every two years, the Prize is intended to reward the efforts of a person, group of people or international institution that has contributed to the development of knowledge and society through art, teaching and research in social sciences and humanities.
