The Governments of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, jointly with the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the SADC Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) are organizing the 2nd Regional Meeting on Tools for the Sustainable Management of Transboundary Aquifers.

The meeting will gather high profile delegates from the SADC region together with researchers, international water management institutions, regional organizations, and regional institutes.

In the framework of the UNESCO-IHP activities devoted to the protection and sustainable management of groundwater resources shared by two or more countries, this meeting will allow stakeholders to engage and debate experiences and ways forward on international cooperation on groundwater and recommend solutions that will help reduce poverty and improve livelihoods and water and food security in the face of climate change. The meeting will also provide essential training on frameworks and tools to support the assessment and management of transboundary aquifers, such as international water law including its linkages and interaction with domestic water legislation, conjunctive surface and groundwater management institutional capacity assessment, and gender.
