Freestyle Inc. was started in Dominica in 1996, at a time when the economy was reeling from an unravelling agricultural export sector shaken badly by the end of European trade preferences. Four young entrepreneurs came together to explore the options offered by copyright. The company they created first made its mark by conceptualising and executing a campaign for a Dominican beverage producer using a highly imaginative computer animation for use on local television.

Freestyle Inc. actively exploits niches where intellectual property and creativity are the most important elements of the service or product its offers. All the company's activities are based on copyright and are either in the core copyright sector or in the interdependent copyright sector. Examples include creation of polyphonic ringtones and the use of large animated billboards in advertising and branding campaigns for a leading telecoms provider in the Caribbean. Licenses for the ringtones were obtained from the Performing Right Society (PRS) and from the Copyright Music Organization of Trinidad and Tobago for the reproduction right.

In 2005 the company began to explore the video game market and now tests games for a major game developer from India. It also manages sponsorship for their clients at high profile events such as the St. Lucia Jazz and the Barbados Jazz Festival. Freestyle Inc., now a group of companies, is now moving to develop three new product lines: a list management capability for direct marketing online; a document management service in the ‘cloud’; and applications for smart phones and tablets.
