At the beginning of the 21st century, the Biblioteca Nacional de España embarked on a commitment to the digitization of its collections, on the basis of which it has developed a strategy for the online dissemination of its collections through different channels:
The Hispanic Digital Library and the Digital Newspaper Library, which provides access to the digitized collections.
BNElab, a space for experimentation and innovation in which several projects are being developed.
Comunidad BNE, a collaborative project based on the BNE collections.
BNEscolar, a portal that provides access to BNE content and educational activities.
Datos.bne.es, a semantic catalog that offers BNE data in a more intuitive and comprehensive way than the traditional catalog.
The Spanish Web Archive and the preservation of born-digital books implies long-term preservation and access to content without a tangible physical medium.

What are the results achieved so far through the implementation of the policy/measure?:
This strategy has had an enormous impact that is difficult to summarize. In general terms, the digitization of funds and the promotion of their reuse has meant reaching a number of citizens and consultation of funds unique compared to the "physical world". To illustrate this, in the last four years, the number of users in person has been around 100,000, while the website receives around 7,000,000 visits and the BNE has more than 500,000 followers on social networks.
As for access to the collections, in a year, around 200,000 titles are loaned and the number of downloads of digital documents is around 10,000,000.
Financial resources allocated to the policy/measure in USD:
It is very difficult to estimate, since these actions are developed due to all the previous work of reception, conservation and technical processing of the collections. In any case, as a guideline, the investment made by the BNE, more or less, in these projects over the period is around 7.351.052 dollars, as a result of two Collaboration Agreements with the Public Business Entity Red.es.

The digitization of collections, the preservation of born-digital heritage and the promotion of the reuse of the BNE's contents and data represent an unprecedented and incomparable dissemination of the institution's collections and, therefore, a very valuable way of contributing to the institution's main mission.
