Celebrating the 10th anniversary - Adoption of the 2005 Convention

Today, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the day on which the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was adopted.

On the basis of the recommendation of the Executive Board, the General Conference of UNESCO requested the Director-General to submit at the October 2005 session a Preliminary Report accompanied by a Preliminary Draft of a Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents and Artistic Expressions (Resolution 32C/34).

Following submission of the documents, the Convention was adopted by the General Conference at UNESCO at its 33rd session on 20 October, 2005.

Now ratified by 140 Parties, the 2005 Convention is the first international instrument of its kind to recognize the specific nature of cultural goods and services, making it a key vehicle when it comes to promoting sustainable human development.

The Convention works to create an environment in which artists, cultural professionals, practitioners and citizens worldwide can create, produce, distribute, disseminate and enjoy a broad range of cultural goods, services and activities.
