On 11 December 2015, UNESCO Creative Cities Network has welcomed 47 cities from 33 countries. The Network bears witness to an enhanced diversity and geographical representation with cities from 22 countries not previously represented. Today, UCCN is 116 Cities from 54 countries worldwide.
Proportion of UCCN Cities per country
Launched in 2004, UCCN aims to foster international cooperation with and between Member Cities committed to investing in culture and creativity as levers for sustainable urban development, social inclusion and cultural vibrancy, as highlighted by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the international community in September 2015.
Each City Member distinguished itself within the seven creative fields covered by the Network: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music. Following the 2015 Call for Applications, the highest numbers of designated Cities belong to the creative fields of Music, Gastronomy and Literature.
In the future, UCCN means to enhance its geographical and creative fields balance. By Member Cities commitment, by developing partnerships and by sharing best practices, the Network will continuing to serve as a key platform to promote culture and creativity as essential levers of sustainable urban development.
