The “Street Design International Challenge 2022” fostered inter-city dialogue on sustainable design
On 17 December, Wuhan, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, in collaboration with fellow Creative Cities of Curitiba and Querétaro, hosted the Award Ceremony of the “Street Design International Challenge 2022”. The competition, which involved teams from 11 Creative Cities, awarded 6 projects reimagining a peri-urban street through biophilic design.
The winners of the competition came from the five Creative Cities of Wuhan, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte, Montreal and Chordeleg. The competition, which aimed to promote new ways of thinking about urban design, awarded the projects that embellished peri-urban streets while responding to the needs of citizens and integrating the principles of sustainability into urban planning. The ceremony also included a networking session where teams could share their experiences of the competition and discuss possible improvements for next editions.
In addition to the Award Ceremony and the networking event, the “International Innovative Design Education Forum”, hosted by the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, consolidated the results of the Street Design Challenge and brought together Creative Cities to explore the future of design education. The event, which took place in a hybrid format, featured 9 speakers from 9 Creative Cities who explored the theme of "Innovative Design Education for the Future".
The initiative was therefore a great opportunity to connect Creative Cities around the world and reflect on design as a solution-oriented creative field which can address the challenges of our time and build the sustainable cities of tomorrow.
