MODERNISM FOR THE FUTURE: Kaunas’creative centre for community building through culture and design

When:
Wed, 02/21/2018 to Mon, 12/31/2018

Kaunas, Creative City of Design,is well-known for the Modernist architecture that has shaped the urban landscape of the city since the first half of the XX century in Lithuania. The great physical heritage of the Modernist Movement does not only represent the rich cultural past, but it impacts every day’s life of its citizens and their sense of belonging to the city. This is why the city seized the opportunity of its designation as European Capital of Culture for 2022, to regenerate its urban environment and to foster its citizens’ emotional attachment to Kaunas’ design, history and culture.

The Creative City of Kaunas is thus proud to announce the establishment of “Modernism for the Future”, a centre dedicated to the discovery of 20th century cultural heritage of the city through educational and creative activities. The aim of the centre is to mediate between different stakeholders (public actors, private sector, tourists and civil society) to promote the city’s architectural heritage as a tool for community building.

Kaunas is glad to invite the Network members to the several initiatives that will take place in the creative centre until August 2018 within the framework of the "Modernism for the European Year of Cultural Heritage". The events include:

  • Summer school "Historic urban landscape of Modern Movement and value": June 25-29, 2018, Kaunas
  • "Forum of historic cities and sites of Modern Movement in East Europe": September 11, 2018, Kaunas.
