LAB.2030 | The Reemdoogo Music Centre: An Incubator for Burkina Faso’s Cultural Industries
Although Ouagadougou is home to numerous talented and creative individuals, its creative sector faces a number of challenges. In 2011, an initiative was launched with the goal of providing the much-needed infrastructure and management support required in order to make the sector grow and become economically sustainable. The Reemdoogo project is a phased initiative that seeks to create musical facilities within the city. One creative hub, the music garden, is already operational while a second one is planned to be built in another district. The centre offers a wide variety of educational support including training materials and workshops, whose aim is to equip musicians with the necessary skills required to work in the sector. In order to encourage professional development within the industry, the centre provides an opportunity for music entrepreneurs to meet experts from the industry and gain hands-on experience. In response to limited infrastructure, recording studios and instruments are provided, as well as an open-air stage so that creativity can be shared within the community. This eagerness to develop music brings people together, offering a safe space for self-improvement and group cohesiveness. With support of both public and private organizations, this creative incubator is a positive step in helping Burkina Faso achieve its Country Strategic Development Plan (SCAD).
