Karlsruhe celebrated Timișoara’s designation as the 2023 European Capital of Culture through media arts
From 17 February to 19 February, Karlsruhe, a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts, organized a series of immersive artistic projections throughout the city of Timișoara, its long-standing partner, to celebrate its designation as the 2023 European Capital of Culture.
On three consecutive evenings, “Ballet of the Cities”, an impressive video installation by local Karlsruhe artist Jonas Denzel, made the city of Timișoara’s buildings come alive and dance, by staging choreographed dances projected on the National Theatre, Opera House and a historic hospital. Each projection was precisely adapted to the architecture of the locations, allowing for them to fully melt into the buildings. Created with an electric cargo bicycle equipped with mobile projection technology, this project combined art with sustainable power generation, reflecting Karlsruhe’s efforts towards centering culture and creativity at the heart of its sustainable development plans. Accessible to all, these projections were a unique occasion for spectators to come together and rediscover the city’s urban beauty through a new lens and showcased the power of art for exchanging ideas and reinforcing cultural dialogue between cities.
Through this project, the city of Karlsruhe reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international cooperation between cities while improving access to and participation in cultural life in public urban spaces.
