Shiners High School is a community-based school founded in 2014 in Kikagati Sub County, Isingiro district, Western Uganda. Located in an area with among the highest poverty and HIV/AIDS rates in Western Uganda.Rebecca Katushabe started Shiners High School Kikagati to give poor, orphaned and at-risk children a home and high quality education.He saw how the challenges of poverty, illiteracy and diseases inhibited students learning. With support from friends and the local community they constructed four classrooms and an administration block.
By providing holistic quality education within a rural village, Shiners offers the only opportunity for most students to continue education past the primary level. Shiners is committed to creating co-education learning environment, where girls learn side by side with boys– empowering young women and promoting gender equality.
Students of Shiners Secondary live and learn within their village, allowing them to share their education with their families and community. Shiners holistic model of education extends beyond classroom and equips students with the skills to create positive change in their community. These students are leaders of “today” and “tomorrow”
