September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world International Literacy Day 2014 will be celebrated worldwide on 8 September under the theme Literacy and Sustainable Development. The Day will be “an opportunity to remember a simple truth: literacy not only changes lives, it saves them,” explains the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, in her message for the Day On this occasion, it is an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems around us and within own communities.
