Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies present opportunities for sustainable development, but they also create challenges, not least in the form of human rights and ethical concerns raised by the use of AI systems and a growing digital and knowledge divide between and within countries. In order to address these challenges, appropriate responses from policy makers at the global, regional and national levels are needed. In addition, lack of awareness, policy integration and coherence, education, skills, resources and institutional capacities to address these challenges limit the ability of Member States to respond to the emerging challenges at the intersection of technology and society.
In March 2019, UNESCO organized an information meeting for Member States on the organization’s work related to AI. At the meeting, the Assistant Director General for Communication and Information underlined the importance of a needs assessment to design UNESCO’s programmes and priorities to address the concerns of the Member States.
