The Young Girl and the Hijab

To consider the veil as a symbol of freedom and independence seems, to say the least, paradoxical in Western society in the XXIst century.

Yet the story of young Mariam brings another perspective to the question. By telling her almost ordinary life story, Saudi film director Faiza Ambah addresses a series of reflections on identity and multiculturalism, with a special focus on adolescence, friendship and love. 

On 22 September 2015, UNESCO organizes the screening of Mariam, followed by a debate, as part of the commemoration of the International Day of Peace (21 September).
