98.1 FM

Sauti FM was established in July 2007. It broadcasts from Ndori market, Rarieda constituency in Nyanza Province. It is a community Radio station in Kenya and it broadcasts in Luo, a native language of the people living in this region. The radio station is a project by Bondo Youth Group, a Community Based Organization (CBO) in Rarienda constituency. The radio station has a broadcast capacity of 35km radius.

The project Empowering Local Radios with ICTs conducted a research together with local radio stations to identify main issues of local public concern in the Sauti FM’s coverage area:

Health

  1. Malaria
  2. HIV/Aids
  3. Waterborne diseases – Bilharzia, typhoid and amoeba

Agriculture

  1. Outdated crop husbandry techniques
  2. Lack of information to facilitate adoption of other ventures e.g fish farming
  3. Unavailability of consultancy services in agriculture

Women Empowerment

  1. Women in leadership
  2. The girl child
  3. Uniting women

In audio presentation you will learn how radio Sauti FM helped to bring peace and preserve chaos during elections in Kenya 2013 (Audio 1). Rhoda Adala worked as a secretary before she came to radio Sauti FM. In five years she became a presenter and a producer of women’s empowerment programs. Moreover, she was assigned to represent the staff at the Board of Management of the station.
