The staff of the Mang’elete FM community radio station attended to an extensive 4 days Strategic Plan development workshop, held from 9th to 12th February 2015 at the Court Yard Hotel, Kibwezi Town, Makueni County in Kenya.

20 media professionals participated to the workshop, in addition to 13 board members, 4 Members from the management Committee and 3 representatives from the local community. The amount of women participating in the event was 12, showing the progress on gender equality and women’s’ integration in society that initiatives such as the ones promoted by UNESCO. Little by little goals are accomplished and mentality is changing!

This time, the main objective of the workshop was to show and teach participants about development strategies that can enable the station to generate enough income in order to become financially sustainable, raise the quality of programme’s production, improve radio station management structures, and raise community participation in programming.

The lead Facilitator Mr. Njuki Githethwa, thanked the participants and especially the board Members for making sure that the ongoing Strategic plan which is expiring this year is followed to the letter.

The meeting members agreed that the Station Management will be the lead panel for monitoring work in the five years plans to make sure of its thorough implementation. Having better structures through the strategic plan can be a tool used to attract many donors for funding the radio station’s operations. 

This workshop was organized within the framework of the “Empowering Local Radio with ICTs” project led by UNESCO and funded by the Swedish government UNESCO's project "Empowering Local Radios with ICTs" aims to bridge the gap between poor people - especially women and girls - and the public debate on issues of local public concern. This is achieved through a series of capacity-building activities in local radio stations, improving the programming quality, providing training on the use of ICTs and helping them to increase their geographical range of news coverage with a network of correspondents. The project, furthermore, focus on gender equality actions and financial sustainability of the radio stations.
