Objectives and Mission: 

To further the study, practice, documentationa, preservation and dissemination of traditional music, including folk, popular, classical and urban music, and dance, of all countries.

General description: 

Organizes biennial World Conferences and periodic colloquia in various countries; maintains contact with radio organizations throughout the world. Study groups (19): African Musics; Applied Ethnomusicology; East Asian Historical Musical Sources; Ethnochoreology; Folk Musical Instruments; Historical Sources of Traditional Music; Iconography of the Performing Arts; Maqam; Mediterranean Music Studies; Multipart Music; Music and Dance in Southeastern Europe; Music and Dance of Oceania; Music and Gender; Music and Minorities; Music Archaeology; Music in the Arab World; Music of the Turkic-Speaking World; Musics of East Asia; Performing Arts of Southeast Asia. These groups hold periodic symposia and publish results of their on-going research.
