International Association Of University Presidents

Objectives and Mission: 

Founded in 1964 in England, the IAUP is an association of university chief executives from higher education institutions and Universities around the world. It gathers around 600 members, leaders of institutions of higher education, i.e. Rectors, Presidents, Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors from over 100 countries.
Its mission is to promote peace, well-being and security for humanity through education as well as to generate friendship and better understanding among higher education institutions. IAUP wishes to be the global voice for Higher Education leaders and to promote research and improve quality of higher education worldwide. To facilitate cultural and academic exchanges of faculty and students as a contribution to maintaining world peace and towards the achievement of a sustainable development.

General description: 

The main motto of the IAUP: "Peace, welfare and security of humankind through education", as well as its field of activity, have not changed, since its founding in 1964. The IAUP as an association of university chief executives from high education institutions around the world. Membership is limited to those who serve as presidents, rectors or vice-chancellors at regional, national and accredited colleges or universities. IAUP has continued to strive for excellence in the following:
to increase the exchange of experiences, levels of collaboration and networking cetween university leaders;
to contribute to a worldwide vision of higher education;
to strengthen the international mission of institutions throughout the world;
to make every effort for the voice of educational leaders to be heard and to support sustainable development in a context of global competency.
IAUP is a NGO holding the highest (ECOSOC) consultation rights at the United Nations and formal consultation status with UNESCO. Over the years, IAUP has contributed to the strengthening of the international mission and qualify of education of its member institutions and has grown to become an association of around 370 members, from 78 countries in the world.
