The mission of Green Cross is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity’s relationship with nature. Green Cross promotes legal, ethical and behavioural norms that ensure basic changes in the values, actions and attitudes of government, the private sector and civil society, necessary to build a sustainable global community; prevents and resolves conflicts arising from environmental degradation; provides assistance to people affected by the environmental consequences of wars and conflicts. The work of Green Cross is based on mediation and cooperation, not confrontation, and focuses on the need for dialogue and transparent interaction between all sectors of modern society. Green Cross provides: unbiased environmental analysis and expertise, information dissemination, education, neutral fora for public debate, scientific studies, and social and medical support.
The organization concentrates its efforts on three programmes: - Environmental education and communication. The programme includes the organization of international conferences and competitions (such as the Earth Dialogues, Environmental Millennium Awards, and the Earth Charter Youth Contest) and the publication of The Green Cross Optimist magazine in six languages and its worldwide distribution. There are also specific national projects such as promoting the Earth Charter Initiative, a general manifesto for a sustainable future that has been endorsed by thousands of organizations, representing more than 100 million individuals and serves as a universal code of ethics for people. - Environmental consequences of wars and conflicts. This programme works to mitigate the social, environmental and economic consequences of damage attributed to wars and conflicts, especially chemical weapons of mass destruction, the Chernobyl disaster and Viet Nam War. - Prevention and resolution of natural resource conflicts. A project entitled “Green Cross Water Conflict Prevention Programme” that works at local, national and international levels to prevent and resolve conflicts in water-stressed regions, and promote access to water for life as a human right and encourage wide and active public participation towards an integrated management of water resources, especially for international river basins is currently under way. Energy and resource efficiency is another project through which Green Cross promotes new consumption patterns designed to promote energy conservation, stem climate change and preserve our natural resources.
