The FAS pursues the following objectives:
Fostering, supporting and promoting women's initiatives in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts in Africa, and for the respect of their rights;
Strengthening women's leadership capacity, including at the grassroots, to restore and maintain peace in their countries;
Engendering policies, structures, programmes and the peace process for the attainment of durable peace and human security in Africa;
Advocating at the national, regional and international levels for African women's rights and concerns, and their critical role on issues of peace and security.
FAS is meant to be capable of promoting its objectives within existing and emerging structures for equality, peace and development in Africa and to act as a communication link between African women committed to the cause of peace and prominent women at national, regional and international levels.
FAS has activities in the following fields:
Advocacy-it aims to encourage policy-making bodies at all levels to develop and implement policies which promote gender mainstreaming and to adopt the principle of gender parity, thus ensuring the full participation of African women in all decision-making processes.
Solidarity Missions-It organizes peace and solidarity missions to share experiences and assess the role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding in conflict-torn regions. It has undertaken such missions to Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Capacity Building-It conducts training workshops specifically adapted to the needs of grassroots women in the areas of civic education, conflict resolution, negotiation and leadership.
Promotion of Democracy-It conducts workshops and training sessions in order to promote the participation of women in democratization processes.It has monitored a number of elections to evaluate and report on the participation of women and whether processes were conducted democratically.
Justice for Women - Justice for Humanity-It is committed to the pursuit of justice against perpetrators of war crimes and violators of women's human rights. FAS develops and advocates for measures to ensure that national and international legislation in Africa protects women's rights
