The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today announced a US$100,000 contribution to support rehabilitation measures at Egypt's Museum of Islamic Art, following the explosion of a car in front of the main entrance of the Museum on 24 January last.
"The damage caused by the senseless bombing earlier this year was a significant attack on the history and identity of the Egyptian people. It therefore gives me great pleasure to be able to announce this significant contribution towards rehabilitation measures. I renew my pledge to mobilize UNESCO's experience and expertise to rebuilding the Museum and restoring the damage. This heritage is part of the universal story of humanity, shared by all and we must all do everything to safeguard it," the Director-General declared.
