UNESCO Director-General addresses UN Security Council – Watch live at 10am (GMT-4)

Director-General Irina Bokova’s statement takes place within the debate entitled, “Maintenance of international peace and security: destruction and trafficking of cultural heritage by terrorist groups and in situations of armed conflicts,” and the possible adoption of a UN Security Council Resolution on the protection of cultural heritage in the event of armed conflicts.

The debate will address as a core issue the counter-terrorism dimension of the protection of cultural heritage, and in particular the means to improve the operational response of the international community to the trafficking of cultural heritage as a source of income for terrorist groups, two years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2199.
