A workshop to launch a study on “Policies and Practices on TVET Teachers and Instructors in the Arab Region” is taking place in UNESCO, Paris from 19 to 20 February 2013.
Ministry officials are expected from the 10 Arab countries covered in the study: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia. They will be joined by a variety of experts and specialists in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
TVET is the best avenue for improving links between education, skills development for employment and sustainable livelihood. The Third International Congress on TVET organized by UNESCO in Shanghai (China) in May 2012 underscored this reality and made strong recommendations for countries to develop appropriate policies to enhance the relevance of TVET to their national development objectives. These policy measures include strategies for better addressing the need of TVET teachers and instructors.
In the Arab region, the countries’ efforts towards higher quality and more relevant TVET will require scientific evidence of the scope of teacher shortage, gender inequality, the provision of teacher and instructor training, teaching and training materials, teaching methods, industry-institute interaction, as well as appropriate career structures.
The study aims to close this information gap and provide a framework for comparison of prevailing practices, in order to pave the way for the development of collaboration and partnership at regional level and beyond. The purpose of the workshop is to help participants develop a common understanding of the objectives of the study, and provide them with a platform for jointly defining the data collection and analysis process, the reporting framework and the modalities for validation and dissemination of the outcomes.
The workshop is organized by the International Task Force on Teachers for Education for All (EFA), in collaboration with UNESCO (Headquarters and Beirut regional bureau) and the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre in Bonn (Germany). The opening ceremony on 19 February will be chaired by a representative of the UNESCO Assistant-Director General for Education in the presence of Ambassadors and permanent Delegates to UNESCO of the participating countries and of the Task Force Steering Committee members.
