On 23 April, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and the Minister of National Education of Côte d'Ivoire, Kandia Camara, signed an Agreement for the establishment of a UNESCO National office in Abidjan.
The Director-General recalled UNESCO’s action to support countries in post-conflict situations and underlined that the opening of the Abidjan Office represents an opportunity to deepen UNESCO’s action in this field.
"The opening of this Office will allow us to deepen UNESCO’s cooperation with Côte d'Ivoire", said the Director-General.
"The establishment of the National Office in Abidjan will give a new impetus to this cooperation, in the best possible environment of peace and reconciliation," said the Minister.
The establishment of this Office follows a commitment by the Director-General and the President of Côte d'Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, at the margin of the Abidjan Forum for a culture of peace in West Africa, held in 2012.
