The Basque version of "Rethinking Education: Towards a global common good?" has been launched. The launch at the Basque Government’s office in Biscay on 26 February, 2016, brought together over 100 participants including the Basque Vice-Minister for Education, Ms Arantza Aurrekoetxea, educators, researchers, and civil society organizations. The event included panel discussions on innovative approaches to translate the principles contained in Rethinking Education into educational practice; and education and technology for social transformation.
The event follows the launch on 19 January of the Spanish version of the publication at the UNESCO Office in Mexico City within the framework of a national meeting with educational authorities.
A new humanistic approach to education in the Twenty-First century
In line with the spirit of UNESCO’s education publication, Learning: The Treasure Within (UNESCO, 1996), Rethinking Education reconsiders the purpose of education and learning, as well as the subsequent principles, which should be priorities for educational governance. It argues for a humanistic approach in which the ‘support and progress of dignity, the capacity and well-being of people, in relation with others and with nature, should be the fundamental purpose of education in the Twenty-First century’ (UNESCO, 2015).
The publication serves as a reference for the vision and principles for Sustainable Development Goal 4’s action plan, the Education 2030, Framework of Action, adopted by over 184 countries in November 2015. It is, in turn, a call for dialogue in public policy around the purpose of education and the organization of learning to ensure an inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030.
This publication presents an opportunity to reflect on and discuss a new vision of education which responds to a changing world and is based on respect for life and human dignity, equal rights, social justice, cultural diversity, international solidarity and the shared responsibility of a sustainable future.
