Latin American Ministers of Environment support ESD and GAP implementation

At the 20th Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean held from 28 to 31 March 2016 in Cartagena, Colombia, learders recognized the importance of environmental and sustainability education at all levels of teaching and learning.

Takng into account the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the final decision 3 on environmental education states that access and exchange of information, knowledge, experience and technical resources on ESD shall be reinforced among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The decision also requests joint action of UNEP and UNESCO to strengthen the capacity of educators, trainers and teachers to facilitate learning on the new challenges of sustainable development, and the promotion of environmental education and training activities, including topics on sustainable lifestyles, climate change, greenhouse gases emissions, wildlife trafficking, solid waste management, chemicals and mercury pollution, disasters risk management, biodiversity, reforestation and forest regeneration, and air quality, sustainable consumption and production partners.
