Last Thursday, Gen. C.A. Vincenzo GIULIANI, the Deputy General Commander of the Italian Carabinieri and his delegation arrived to Jordan in an official mission to discuss cooperation and expertise exchange said The Jordan Times. The delegation, composed by Col. Giuseppe BATTAGLIA , Ten. Renato PUGLISI and attended by the Italian Defence Attaché, Gen. B. Roberto DE MASI, was received by Gendarmerie Department Director Maj. Gen. Hussein AL HAWATMEH.

As part of this mission to the Kingdom, the officials were invited to visit the Amman citadel and the Roman Theatre. Jordanian officials briefed the delegation on the cultural and historical relevance of these two unique sites while accompanied by H. E. Giovanni BRAUZZI, the Italian Ambassador to Jordan and Ms. Costanza FARINA, UNESCO Representative to Jordan.

During the visit, the Carabinieri showed their support to the #Unite4herritage campaign and posed holding the hash tag sign in English and Arabic. The Italian specialized police division is a current key member and funder of the newly stabilised “Task Force Unite4heritage” set up by UNESCO and Italy. The Italy- UNESCO Agreement for the establishment of the “Blue Helmets of Culture” was signed on 16 February 2016 in Rome and aims at putting in place measure to secure cultural heritage and counter illegal trafficking. The Task force relies on the expertise of the Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Heritage sites, who have been recognized at the international level for their high level of expertise as highlighted by the Ministry of Defence of Italy on their Web Portal.

This high level Task Force is integral part of the #unite4heritage campaign, powered by UNESCO and launched at the University of Baghdad by the UNESCO director General Ms. Irina Bokova on March 2015. Created as a movement to protect and safeguard heritage under threat, the initiative has turned into a global call to reclaim the importance of heritage as a platform to promote mutual understanding and as a tool to fight extremism.

Jordan joined the movement in May 2015 with a public concert entitled “The Rhythm of Jordan: Tradition and Modernity.” HRH Princess Wejdan al Hashemy launched the campaign with the inspiring words: “We all unite for heritage for our own future”

The campaign has been largely supported by the UNESCO Office in Amman through the organization of several activities and through the mobilization of a group of volunteers who would become young ambassadors of the #Unite4Heritage principles and values.
